8 QR Code Tips
The use of smartphones as a business tool continues to grow exponentially. Along with this growth is the proliferation of marketing tools like QR (Quick Response) codes. While they're still free, unregulated and growing as a way to connect with your target audience, we offer some tips on how to use QR codes more effectively.
- Creating a QR code doesn't cost anything. There are several free sites—QR Stuff, Kaywa and Mobilefish, to name just a few—that will turn your URL into a QR code in a matter of seconds.
- Currently, most smartphones can scan codes as small as .75 inches, although printing it larger lessens the likelihood of scanning errors.
- While most QR codes are black and white, other color combinations can draw attention. You can create a rainbow spectrum across the QR code, or assign different colors to different sections of the code. Just remember to use a dark color for the black parts, while using a lighter color for the background. Check out this link for options. http://blog.qr4.nl/post/Colourful-QR-Codes.aspx
- No licenses are required to use QR codes.
- iPhones currently scan the majority of QR codes (68%), followed by Android and then Blackberry devices.
- Linking a QR code to a Flash site is something to avoid, since most smartphones can't display Flash animations.
- You certainly want to track and analyze the traffic. Start by using tracking urls or unique landing pages so you can track performance.
- Remember, you still need to have enough white space around the code to make it readable.
One more tip: be creative. Simply providing a QR code doesn't mean your target audience is driven to your site. Find ways to make it interesting and compelling by delivering content that enriches the customer experience and offers real value.
